Improving Oil Quality and Extending Equipment Life

Hydraulic Lubrication Oil Portable Filter Cart
Do you know how to improve your oil quality and extend your equipment life?

We are often confronted with issues regarding hydraulic and lubrication oil quality. It is common knowledge that a majority of system failures are the result of fluid contamination. These failures can result in costly repairs, consuming countless man hours, expensive replacement parts, exorbitant rush shipping fees on said parts, and costly down time. While not a cure-all, monitoring and maintaining oil quality can be simple and cost-effective. By maintaining oil quality you can dramatically extend fluid service life, extend critical component service life, minimize repair costs and down time, increase maintenance personnel productivity, and dramatically reduce replacement oil costs. Though the price of crude oil recently dipped to around $75.00 per barrel, many specialty hydraulic and lubricating oils still bear a hefty price tag. There is still a huge incentive to maintain oil quality and extend service life.

On the front end, the costs associated with embarking on or improving an oil quality monitoring program can be relatively low. Initial steps should include identifying the critical systems, and the most critical (costly) components of those systems. Inventory of these systems should include some basic but valuable information, including, type of oil used, operating temperature, pressure, viscosity, target ISO cleanliness code, current filtration (if any), repair or maintenance history, oil sampling data (if there is any). Next is identifying the best areas within those systems for fluid sampling. Establishing a protocol for consistent fluid sampling will help establish trends in your analysis. As the program takes shape, you will most likely start looking at improving storage and transfer methods, upgrading filtration, portable filtration equipment, and if the situation demands, laser particle counting or monitoring equipment.

If you would like more information on developing or improving your oil quality program, adding portable filtration equipment, or a demonstration of our laser particle counters and fluid sampling practices, the customer service and sales team at Precision filtration Products is equipped to assist you. Please call us at 888-679-6645 or email sales [at] precisionfiltration.com to schedule the development or the improvement of an oil quality program at your facility.

How Do You Eliminate Oil Mist Emissions?

WARNING: Failure to comply with government environmental regulations can be costly!

  • Have you had any oil mist emissions from your lube oil reservoir?
  • Have you experienced any shaft seal leakage?
  • Have you had concerns about potential health, safety and environmental hazards associated with venting the mist directly into the surrounding environment?

The solutions may be easier than you think...

Gas Turbine Stainless Steel Vacuum Assisted Oil Mist Eliminator - Precision Filtration Products
If you have answered YES to any of the questions above, oil mist elimination is the answer you have been waiting for! Oil mist eliminators are designed to protect your equipment and the environment. This helps to reduce operating costs, as well as mitigate potential health and safety hazards. We are committed to providing systems that protect critical machinery while safeguarding the surrounding environment.

Precision Filtration Products offers oil mist solutions for turbine applications, as well as reciprocating engines and generator sets. Our vacuum-assisted oil mist eliminators are designed to eliminate visible oil mist emissions vented from turbine and generator lube oil consoles. These eliminators capture and coalesce oily aerosol mist and incorporate a draining mechanism to recycle oil back to the console or a separate storage area. A variety of manual or automated control options are available to precisely regulate the vacuum or pressure level at critical seal points along the drive train. This control prevents excess system pressure, a primary cause for seal leakage at the bearings and shaft seals.

Alstom GT11NM Gas Turbine with an Oil Mist Eliminator - Precision Filtration ProductsFor both land and marine based engine applications, excessive pressure in the crankcase diminishes performance, causes oil leaks and pushes harmful emissions to the surrounding environment. Vacuum-assisted oil mist eliminators are engineered to capture vented crankcase emissions and maintain crankcase pressure levels in accordance with the engine manufacturer's specifications. These eliminators reduce the potential for oil leaks caused by excess pressure and eliminate harmful oil mist from engine rooms for improved health and safety. Engine blow-by increases with wear, so these systems incorporate manual, automatic, and re-circulating devices to effectively control crankcase pressure over the engine's entire life span.

What's That? You Have Water in Your Oil?!

Water, great for living creatures, bad for hydraulic and lubrication systems... Contamination is the leading cause of component failures in lubrication and hydraulic systems. While particulate is the most often encountered nemesis, oil contaminated with water creates a set of headaches like no other. For those of you who have dealt with water contamination, and the costs associated with it in your critical systems, you know exactly what I am talking about.

Some of the problems associated with water contamination are loss of lubricity, corrosion, changes in oil viscosity, instability or dropout of additives, and displacing of oil at contacting services causing increased wear. Water contamination in storage tanks and reservoirs can lead to microbial growth that will form "sludge" that can clog filters and accelerate corrosion. Problems will occur, whether visible or not, in any system in the presence of more than about 0.2% water. The repair costs, parts and man hours, plus down time associated with water contamination can be astronomical.

Vacuum dehydration is often the most expedient and cost effective means of bringing water contamination under control. PFP has a complete line of vacuum dehydrators for sale and emergency rental. PFP offers a variety of approaches in dealing with contaminated hydraulic and lubrication systems. From oil sampling and testing, to emergency rental systems , to portable filter carts and filter upgrades, we have the solutions to your most difficult contamination related problems. Call PFP today at 888-679-6645 and allow us to help you improve the oil quality in your critical systems, hit your target ISO cleanliness codes, extend oil and equipment service life, and improve your bottom line.
